Intag is an extensive transition valley towards the northwest Ecuadorian coast, with a tropical and subtropical climate; It is characterized by its high natural wealth in flora, fauna, water sources and microclimates, ideal for the cultivation of high altitude Arabica coffee.
The coffee produced in the Intag Valley, for several generations since the 20th century, has been grown in a traditional way under the shade of native trees. The selective harvest of ripe fruits and the process of washing and drying in the sun gives it special attributes.
On the initiative of a small group of coffee producers and, with the aim of improving the marketing conditions of their product, in 1998 the Rio Intag Agroartisanal Coffee Growers Association, AACRI, was created. It currently has more than 100 active members, who, thanks to its organization, have directly benefited from the production and marketing of its coffee with greater added value through organic production and direct trade.
Sustainable development is possible by promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
1. Social Impact:
Coffee-growing families are trained in the organic management of coffee cultivation. The association ensures that the income generated in the coffee value chain is distributed equitably among the members, especially among coffee-growing families as they are part of the most vulnerable link.
The Association promotes fair trade and gender equality, in order to generate better conditions of well-being and sustainable development.
2. Economic Dynamics:
The production and marketing of coffee with high added value has significantly increased income, created new sources of work, energised the local economy, directly and indirectly benefiting more families in the Intag area.
3. Environmental Quality:
An organic technological package allows the cooperative members to improve soil conditions, conserve water and protect native forest remnants, considered a refuge for endangered species.
